Described by the New York dance fraternity as perhaps the most innovative choreographer of her generation, Aszure Barton’s work has attracted the patronage of dancing great Mikhail Baryshnikov, resulting in her Artist in Residence status at the Baryshnikov Arts Centre and choreographic commissions from his new touring company, Hell’s Kitchen Dance. Barton has made Sydney Dance Company’s remarkable long-time artist Bradley Chatfield a central figure in Sid’s Waltzing Masquerade. The work reveals the individuality of the company’s 16 dancers - not only their physical differences but also their separate personalities. They’re the opposite of a corps de ballet, she says. With a soundtrack ranging from baroque to jitterbug and costumes designed by fashion designer Michelle Jank in her first commission for the theatre, this is a show dedicated to contrasts and extremes.
